Clan Mackay Macaoidh – “son of Hugh” – possibly descended from Scotland’s royal house. Magnus Mackay fought at Bannockburn (1314). In 1415, the Lord of the Isles gave a chief his daughter and lands. In 1628, Sir Donald Mackay was created Lord Reay. The 9th Lord lost all estates to the Sutherlands (1875). The 11th Lord was Governor of Bombay. The chiefship passed to a Dutch cousin; his son worked in the Foreign Office during WWII. A clan of northern power, captivity, and continental connections.
