Grant
Recent DNA suggests Viking origins, not Norman or Siol Alpin. Olav Hemingsson (c.1057) held Strathspey lands but was executed in 1098. His descendant Aulay adopted the name Grant around 1174. The Grants supported Bruce; after the main line failed, a Stewart husband took the surname. Sir James Grant built Castle Grant (1536). Ludovick Grant was called βthe Highland king.β The chiefs later inherited the Seafield earldoms and a seat in the Lords. Castle Grant still stands. A clan of Viking blood, Highland power, and enduring stone.
