Before the modern kilt came to be, there was the Great Kilt. From the 1500s to the early 1700s, this near-universal Highland garment was the ultimate all-in-one outfit. Untailored and raw, it consisted of a single large length of cloth that was precisely pleated on the ground, wrapped, and belted to provide durable, all-weather protection.
