Sutherland

Clan “Sutherland” the Norsemen’s “Southland.” The family descends from Freskin, a Flemish knight granted land by David I. His son became the first Earl (c.1235). Royal marriages linked them to the Bruce and Stewart lines. In 1771, Elizabeth Sutherland won a landmark succession case in the House of Lords, becoming Countess in her own right. She married the Marquess of Stafford, later Duke of Sutherland. The second duke built the magnificent Dunrobin Castle. The titles later split: the earldom and chiefship passed to Elizabeth, the present Countess; the dukedom went to another line. A clan of Norse‑named, Flemish‑descended, castle‑building nobility.
