Duncan

Clan Duncan, one of Scotland’s oldest personal names, from Gaelic Donnchadh (“warrior of the fort”). Two early kings were Duncan I (Shakespeare’s Macbeth figure) and Duncan II. As a surname, it means “son of Duncan,” with multiple origins across the Gaelic world. Early Duncans were sons of the Earls of Fife, Mar, and Atholl (the last led Highlanders at Bannockburn). The name concentrated in eastern Scotland. Admiral Adam Duncan of Lundie won the Battle of Camperdown (1797) and was made Viscount Duncan; his son became Earl of Camperdown (extinct 1933).
