Keith

Clan Keith from East Lothian lands, the name means “woodland.” Hervey de Keith was the king’s marischal (1159–1185), an office held by the family until 1715. The third Lord Keith became Earl Marischal (1458). George, fifth earl, founded Marischal College, Aberdeen (1593). The Keiths lost Dunnottar Castle and their titles after supporting the 1715 Jacobite rising; the tenth earl fled to Prussia. The Keith‑Falconer Earls of Kintore are now chiefs. Descendants include a colonial governor and a governor general of South Australia. A family of high office, learning, and exile.
