Gordon

Clan Gordon one of the great north‑east families, the Gordons began in the Borders. Richard of Gordon held lands in Berwickshire (1182–1232) – the name means “great fort.” Sir Adam Gordon delivered the Declaration of Arbroath (1320) and received Strathbogie (Huntly) from Bruce. The first Earl of Huntly was created in the 15th century. The chief became Marquess of Huntly (1599) and later Duke of Gordon (1684). The second Marquess, a Royalist, was beheaded in 1647. The dukedom died out in 1836. Some 156 branches of Gordons exist worldwide. A family of power, Renaissance builders, and enduring legacy.
