Macdougall

Clan Macdougall descended from Dugall, son of Somerled, King of the Isles. The Macdougalls built Dunstaffnage, Dunollie, and Duntrune castles. They opposed Norway at Largs (1263). After backing the Comyns, they were defeated by Robert the Bruce in 1308 and lost most lands to the Campbells. Marriage to a Bruce granddaughter later restored much of their estates. The clan fought for the royalists and Stuarts: the 22nd chief was exiled after Sheriffmuir (1715) but pardoned in 1727. A Macdougall fought at Culloden. A clan of island kings, castle builders, and Jacobite exiles.
