Clan Macrae “Son of Grace.” Staunch supporters of the Mackenzies, they were called “Mackenzie’s shirt of mail.” In 1539, Duncan Macrae killed a Macdonald chief with an arrow, ending the siege of Eilean Donan. The clan never had a recognized chief; a 20th‑century dispute remains unresolved. They produced clergymen, including Farquhar Macrae (religious revivalist on Lewis) and Alexander Macrae (who became a Catholic priest). Many served in British Army Highland regiments. In 1912, John Macrae Gilstrap restored Eilean Donan Castle. A WWI memorial honours fallen clansmen. A clan of archers, clergymen, and castle restorers.
