Clan Macleaod (Leod, son of a Norse king), inherited Lewis, Harris, and Skye. Marriage brought Dunvegan – still the chief’s seat. Two branches: Skye (Siol Tormod) and Lewis (Siol Torquil). Alasdair Crotach built the Fairy Tower and Rodel church. Ruaraidh Mor (15th chief) made Dunvegan a cultural centre. His drinking horn – a bottle and a half of claret – must be drained in one draft by each new chief. The Lewis branch fell to the Mackenzies in 1597. A clan of Norse kings, castle builders, and legendary toasts.
