Lamont

Clan Lamont an ancient Argyll clan, once “Great MacLamont of All Cowal.” Probably of Ulster origin, the name derives from Old Norse Logmaor (“Law Giver”). The chiefs held Castles Toward and Ascog until destroyed by the Campbells. In 1646, after surrendering on terms, Sir James Lamont was imprisoned for five years and over 200 clansmen were massacred. The family never recovered. The last clan lands were sold in 1893. The present chief, a priest, lives in Australia. A story of royalism, betrayal, and diaspora.
