Colquhoun

Clan Colquhoun name comes from lands on Loch Lomond, meaning “narrow corner.” First recorded in the 13th century, the family descends from Robert of Colquhoun (1259) and Humphrey of Colquhoun (1296). The barony of Luss, the chief’s modern title, was acquired by marriage around 1368. In 1632, Sir John Colquhoun fled after being accused of witchcraft and abduction. Sir Humphrey Colquhoun opposed the 1707 Treaty of Union. Sir Ian Colquhoun, a decorated First World War veteran, later led efforts to preserve Scotland’s ancient monuments. The chiefs’ early stronghold was Dunglas Castle, near Dumbarton.
