Bell

Clan Bell, a borders family, possibly descended from a Norman follower of David I. The name may come from Old French bel (“fair”). The Bells were among the riding clans of border reivers. Their tower, Blacket House, was destroyed by the English in 1547. After 1603, many Bells moved to Ulster or overseas. Descendants include Andrew Bell (education pioneer), Dr Joseph Bell (inspiration for Sherlock Holmes), General Sir John Bell (Napoleonic Wars), George Joseph Bell (Scots law scholar), and Alexander Graham Bell (telephone). Though Border reivers, some Highland Bells are considered a sept of Clan Macmillan.
