Douglas
Clan Douglas, one of Scotland’s most powerful families. “Good Sir James” Douglas carried Bruce’s heart to the Holy Land. The Black Douglases became so feared that in 1440 the young Earl and his brother were beheaded at Edinburgh Castle after dining with the boy‑king James II. The line ended in 1491. The Red Douglases rose next, producing the Marquess of Douglas and, through a branch, the Marquesses of Queensberry – who gave their name to boxing’s rules. A tale of ambition, violence, and royal suspicion.
