Wallace

Clan Wallace, from Old English wealas (“stranger” or “Briton”). Richard Walensis held land in Ayrshire before 1160. Sir William Wallace, son of Malcolm of Elderslie, refused to submit to Edward I. He defeated the English at Stirling Bridge (1297), was knighted and made Guardian of Scotland, but was defeated at Falkirk (1298). Betrayed, he was executed in London (1305). The Craigie line descended from his uncle. The chiefship later passed to the Cairnhill branch from Jamaica. Captain Henry Wallace became chief in 1888; Robert Wallace won the Croix de Guerre in WWI. A clan of patriots, guardians, and resistance.
