Murray of Atholl
Clan Murray, from the Pictish kingdom of Moray (“sea settlement”), the name became Murray. Sir Andrew Murray fought with Wallace for independence. The Murrays of Tullibardine became Earls (1606), then Dukes of Atholl (1703). Lord George Murray was the brilliant Jacobite general of 1745. The Atholl Highlanders remain the UK’s only private army. Katharine, Duchess of Atholl, was an early female MP who opposed appeasement. The current Duke, Bruce, succeeded in 2012. A clan of seaβkings, Jacobite generals, and political pioneers.
