Clan Macfarlane descended from Alwyn, Earl of Lennox. A Macfarlane sheltered Robert the Bruce; the clan fought at Bannockburn (1314). They lost a claim to the Lennox earldom but allied with the Stewarts by marriage. Chiefs fell at Flodden (1513) and Pinkie (1547). The crest celebrates defending the infant James VI’s crown at Langside (1568). They fought for Montrose (1645) but later supported William and Mary. They stayed out of the 1715 and 1745 risings. The last direct male chief died in 1886. A clan of shelterers, warriors, and antiquaries.
