Clan Donald descended from Donald of Islay (1207), grandson of Somerled, King of the Isles. Angus Og led the clan at Bannockburn (1314) for Bruce. The Lords of the Isles reached their zenith under John, but his treaty with England led James IV to strip him of his titles. The lordship collapsed by 1545. In 1947, Lord Macdonald was recognised as high chief, with subordinate chiefs of Sleat, Clanranald, and Glengarry. A clan of kings, warriors, and tragic ambition.
