Lindsay

The Lindsays came to Scotland with David, Earl of Huntingdon, in the 11th century. A Sir David Lindsay sealed the Declaration of Arbroath (1320). Another won a London tournament (1390) and became first Earl of Crawford. The family produced soldiers, statesmen, and poets. Sir David Lindsay of the Mount wrote Scotland’s first surviving play, Ane Satyre of the Three Estaites (1540), attacking church corruption. The chiefship passed to the Earls of Balcarres, later also Earls of Crawford. The present chief lives at Balcarres, Fife. Edzell Castle’s Renaissance garden survives as a unique heritage site. A clan of law, letters, and loyalty.
