Fraser of Lovat

Clan Fraser of Lovat descended from Sir Simon Fraser, brother of Bruce’s chamberlain. The Gaelic Mac Shimidh means “son of Simon.” In 1544, the Frasers fought the Macdonalds at “the field of shirts.” Simon, the “old fox,” played both sides before backing Prince Charlie. His battalion fought at Culloden (1746); he was the last man beheaded in Britain. The peerage was restored in 1837. Fifteenth Lord Lovat was a WWII commando hero. The great estates have since been sold. A clan of cunning, courage, and tragedy.
