Clan Cameron name likely comes from Cameron in Fife (cam-brun, “crooked hill”). Robert de Cambrun received lands from William the Lion. Sir Ewan Cameron fought at Killiecrankie (1689). Richard Cameron, a Lowland Presbyterian militant, was killed in 1680; his “Cameronians” later became a British Army regiment. The Jacobite chief of Lochiel reluctantly backed Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745 and died in exile. His grandson Donald returned in 1784 but carried out cruel evictions. In 1793, Alan Cameron of Erracht raised the Cameron Highlanders, a regiment closely tied to the clan.
