Buchanan
Legend says the Buchanans descend from Anselan O’Kyan, an Irish noble granted land by Malcolm III. Around 1225, a later Anselan gained Clareinch on Loch Lomond. The Buchanans fought for Robert the Bruce. At Beauge (1421), Sir Alexander Buchanan killed the Duke of Clarence and took his coronet – hence the crest. The chiefly line died out in 1681; a new chief was appointed only in 2018. The great scholar George Buchanan (1506–1582) tutored Mary, Queen of Scots, and James VI, and his political writings championed resistance to tyranny. The Clan Buchanan Society, founded in 1725, is the oldest clan society in the world.
