Clan Scott, The Scotts rose to become one of the most powerful Borders clans. Sir Richard Scott built Buccleuch; his son supported Bruce. They feuded with the Kerrs, settled by marriage. The 1st Earl of Buccleuch (1619) fought in the Netherlands. The 2nd Earl supported the National Covenant. Anne Scott married Charles II’s son, the Duke of Monmouth, and they were created Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch (1663). Monmouth was executed for rebellion, but Anne’s title survived. The family’s art collection at Drumlanrig, Bowhill, and Boughton is worldβfamous. A clan of border lords, royal alliances, and enduring art.
