Clan Maclean, Descended from “Gillean of the Battleaxe,” who fought at Largs (1263). Branches: Duart and Lochbuie. By 1500, they held Mull, Tiree, Islay, Jura, and more. “Red Hector” fell in single combat at Harlaw (1411). A chief died at Flodden (1513). Sir Lachlan Maclean, created baronet (1631), fought for Charles I. His son died at Inverkeithing (1651). The Campbells gained Duart by 1679. Macleans fought at Killiecrankie (1689), Sheriffmuir (1715), and Culloden (1746). Duart Castle was restored in 1911. A clan of battleaxes, single combats, and enduring restoration.
