Johnstone

Clan JohnstoneΒ β€œJohn’s farm” in Annandale. One of the most powerful Border clans, they focused their raiding on the English. A feud with the Maxwells led to the Battle of Dryfe Sands (1593) and the murder of a Johnstone chief at a reconciliation meeting in 1608. The chief was made Lord Johnstone (1633), later Earl of Hartfell and Marquess of Annandale. Sir Archibald Johnston of Wariston was a Covenanter leader executed in 1663. Historic Lochwood Castle now stands in ruins. A clan of border warriors, royalists, and covenanters.
