Clan Fergusson,Β MacFhaerghuisΒ β βson of the angryβ or βson of the bold.β Different branches claim descent from early kings or from Fergus, Prince of Galloway (d.1161). The Kilkerran line is the recognised chief, first recorded in 1464. General Sir Charles Fergusson, 7th Baronet, served in both World Wars and became GovernorβGeneral of New Zealand. The Dunfallandy branch, ardent Jacobites, fought at Culloden and escaped execution. Robert Fergusson (1774) was a poet admired by Robert Burns. A clan of warriors, statesmen, and poets.
