Ramsay

Clan Ramsay, Norman knight Sir Symon de Ramesie came to Scotland with David I (1124). Sir Alexander Ramsay held Dalhousie Castle against Henry IV (1400). John Ramsay saved James VI in the Gowrie Conspiracy (1600). William Ramsay, Earl of Dalhousie (1633), fought for Parliament. The 9th Earl governed Canada and India; his son was Governor‑General of India. The marquessate died in 1860; the earldom continued. Dalhousie Castle is now a hotel; the chief’s seat is Brechin Castle. Allan Ramsay was an Enlightenment poet. A clan of castle‑holders, conspiracists, and empire‑builders.
