MacNeil

Clan MacNeil, descended from Niall (c.1049), possibly Viking in origin. Fought at Largs (1263) and Bannockburn (1314). Independent‑minded, they became Jacobites, fighting at Killiecrankie (1689), in 1715, and 1745. The 21st chief sold Barra in 1838, leading to clearances and diaspora. The chiefship passed to an American cousin. In 1937, Robert Lister Macneil reclaimed Kisimul Castle and Barra. A clan of Viking warriors, Jacobite exiles, and island restorers.
