Maclaren
The Maclarens of Balquhidder and Tiree descend from Laurence, a 13thβcentury abbot, or from the royal house of Dalriada. They signed the Ragman Roll (1296) but likely fought at Bannockburn. Pressured by neighbours and later plundered by Macgregors, they sought Campbell protection. They fought for Montrose, then for the Stuarts at Killiecrankie (1689), Sheriffmuir (1715), and Culloden (1746). Donald Maclaren escaped capture and remained a fugitive until 1757. Today, recovered lands includeΒ Creag an Tuirc β the Boar’s Rock, the clan’s ancient rallying point.
