Macgregor

Clan MacGregor once powerful in Glenstrae and Glenorchy, the MacGregors were relentlessly harried by the Campbells. In 1603, James VI abolished their very name; the chief and eleven chieftains were hanged. The clan scattered, becoming the “Children of the Mist.” Rob Roy MacGregor (1671–1734), forced to use his mother’s name Campbell, became a legendary outlaw and Jacobite. The laws against the MacGregors were repealed in 1774. A clan of persecution, mist, and immortalised rebellion.
