Clan Campbell first appears in records in 1263. The clan’s rise began with loyal service to Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Independence: Sir Neil Campbell received vast lands in Argyll and married the King’s sister. Around 1400, Sir Colin Campbell of Breadalbane, a knight who had fought in the Middle East and the Isle of Rhodes, built Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe. His son Duncan fell at Flodden in 1513. Later, John, first Earl of Breadalbane, was deeply implicated in the Glencoe Massacre of 1692. The Breadalbane lands once stretched a hundred miles from Perthshire to the Atlantic. In 1831, the family was raised to marquisate. The tenth Earl, a wounded Black Watch veteran of World War II, died childless in 1995, leaving the titles dormant.
